Strange thoughts to end 2011-

Hey strangers-

Hope everyone out there is enjoying the final week of 2011. SA hopes that you all can look back on 2011 with cheer and can look forward to the future in 2012 because it is setting up to be a strange one.

We at SA have had quite the year: we moved headquarters from Bethlehem, PA (we wish to see all our 610 homies soon!) to New York, NY in hopes of diving deeper into the fashion world; we have been working the grind to complete our new and improved Spring/Summer 2012 line; we have invited many new riders to the team; we have worked with brilliant artists and photographers; and we have traveled the coast of NJ to spread our name with pride. As a company, we have grown quite a bit, and we intend on keeping that growth strong and steady in the upcoming year.

2012 is nothing but a mystery. Yet, we are planning on bigger and better things - diversified clothing lines, greater distribution, new riders, and more parties. Keep in the loop because we aren't turning back.

We would like to thank all people in the Family for all the hard work and good times. We also would like to thank all who have remained strange for 2011! See you in 2012.

STAY STRANGE

Music Monday 12/19

So you know that Citigroup commercial where that lady is climbing a sketchy cliff, and in the background is this indy song that screams "SOMEBODY LEFT THE GATE OPEN." Well I felt inclined to do some research as my indy-minded nerves started tingling the more I watched the commercial. The group is a bit unknown at the moment, but I'm sure they will make it big as their sound is similar to that of Florence + the Machine, a group we all know and love. Enjoy the vid and free download and remember to solemnly swear to stay strange:

So many periods

As Axl Rose would say, All we need is just a little patience. I mean, damn, this is inhumane, I guess that's what it takes to make a masterpiece.. literally a masterpiece.

I'm beginning to think of a new blog series revolving around true works of art in extremely unconventional methods. These methods can be painfully long or physically painful in general. As long as it stands out, I will gladly reiterate.

.

12.05.2011

We know it's been a while since a blog, but I promise you that's about to change. There are no excuses. It is my duty to stay strange and by God I will.

In order to warm myself back up into the blogging scene, I thought it would be appropriate to begin with a clip from my favorite surf movie ever, only because of Dusty.

Stay Strange.

The 610 Homebase-inspired skateboarding culture in Eastern PA is truly an environment that keeps pushing for more and more. Bethlehem's own Ben Taylor is one of a kind. Ben has been developing his website that is all about the local community. Ben's motivation is skateboarding, but he takes it to the next level. He's created a website that allows the community to share videos, pics, and stories all for the sole purpose of skateboarding in the 610.

Ben's drive will continue to push us at Simply Anti. Check out his site, get involved, and stay strange.

Midwest inspirations

Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers is my so-called Midwest inspiration.

Greetings from Lake Michigan.

I have recently traveled out to Chicago and will be experiencing the wonders of the Midwest for the next couple of months. I'm pretty amped on the people I will meet and the culture that I will try and adapt. Although there are no waves from any ocean, I'm pretty psyched on the fact that I have the opportunity to surf the Great Lakes, which, believe it or not, gets occasional wind swells out the ass.

Through the surf shops few and far in between in Chicago, I'll get a strange understanding of the lifestyle of a Midwest surfer. Even though the waves aren't a replica of the NJ beach breaks during hurricane season, I'm certainly about to experience something I thought I'd never do as well as many others. Let the strange begin.

Today, I got my first feel for the scene here. To say the least, the mood is relatively laid back. In comparison to NYC, people have their appreciated time. They will stop and help you with directions, they walk slowly, and they smile. I guess that's the energy that is released when you put a big city in the middle of the great American plaines. Like many other cities, the culture has a good mix of fashion, music, and art. Yet, this city combines the old with the new. Last night, I walked past the Chicago Theater and noticed that Fleet Foxes were playing in late September. Fleet Foxes, a new band with old sound, would be the artist of choice if walking through the streets of Chicago.

Today, I walked past Dave's Records, a sick record store that claims they sell vinyl only... The sign on the front door reads, "NO CDS!! NEVER HAD 'EM!! NEVER WILL!!" This city is filled with vinyl stores. It's a cool restoration of old musical capabilities with great new albums. I dig it. I walked in the door, and my brain started tingling. I realized that all of these old music albums have some of the best art work ever. Then, it hit me that some of these art pieces would be perfect inspirations for an up-and-coming brand like Simply Anti. My first artist was one of my favs, the Rolling Stones:

I am hopeful that I'll grasp the Chicago culture in the following months. I dig it already. It's strange and so am I, and you too.

The Pit is Back

Ayyyye whats up guys.

This weekend was crazy. Hurricane Irene did her part and we did ours...

Local favorite Mike Gleason pulling into a peeler.. Proving that Westend, Long Branch is back and better than ever. Photo: Jeremy Sciarappa

I'm sure most of you can agree that the media took this storm out of proportion; however, it didn't undermine the swell that it produced. Thank God. We haven't had a swell like Irene in years, and it was much needed. Although, there was a bit of damage from North Carolina to Jersey to Long Island, it didn't matter to those waiting for the offshore winds on Sunday (August 28th) to smack the SE swell on Irene's bosom.

Living on the northern beaches in NJ for this storm was a pretty horrendous. Waking up to power lines dancing on the street, transformers sparking 2 inches above 5 foot surge flood, trees fallen across entire yards, and broken pieces of sea wall thrown 100 yards on to neighboring driveways was just like a coffee before entering into Irene's 18 foot pipeline of a hurricane. Let the pictures say the rest..

Anticipation

September in New Jersey is a special time of year. The beaches clean up, the streets widen, and the surf finally pumps. All surfers in NJ know not to pack their bags for a foreign surf excursion, but to stay put and watch some of the best beach breaks on the planet develop right in front of their very eyes. All NJ surfers can start to smell the winds and rain of the tropical storms hundreds of miles south. They have their boards ready in hand, always anticipating the next Hurricane "_________" to make her way to the dirty beaches of the Parkway state.

NJ surfmen and women find it hard to predict the surf. Swellinfo, surfline, magic seaweed, (dukestorm RIP), the weather channel. They're all loose cannons shouting out different opinions. Tropical storms really like to surprise the NJ coast, and that's that. You just have to be at the right place at the right time. And when its on, its on...

Classic Hurricane Ernesto (2006)

Be sure to keep your ears peeled and your eyes listening for this weekend. It looks like it should be a fulfilling! But where to go?? Let us introduce you to Hurricane Irene:

Swellinfo - Say it aint so.

Dane S. Thompson:

This guy really kills it. His art is something you don't just see everyday in your local arts section of the newspaper. It's something that belongs in the middle of Times Square to be seen around world. In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised if he were there in the very near future. Summer Blogging with Ryan Struck

Picking up my monthly SURFER and SURFING magazines and skimming through all of the pictures is one of my favorite times of month. Not only is it a good bathroom read, but it also keeps you involved with the surfing world as well as inspired by the best surfers in the world riding waves in some of the most beautiful beaches on this planet. Better yet, it's the most inspiring when there are photos of your local beach breaks: seen in a perspective that you never thought was imaginable. If it weren't for New Jersey surf photographer Ryan Struck, we wouldn't be blessed with such perspectives of gnarly NJ beach breaks, priceless instances of many different cultures, and images of mother nature in her wildest forms.

At 25 years of age, Ryan says he thinks "life before photography, and life after photography. My view of the world is forever different in a most excellent way since I have started expressing my surroundings visually. The world around me is constantly changing, and with it, I react through photography."

"There are certain moments that are to be plucked while others are meant to be enjoyed and let pass. Whether you get to these instants on purpose or by chance, the moment captured is sure to leave an impression."

Having such a talented photographer in the local area is a true blessing. So many great pictures have been captured by Ryan Struck like the one above. That's local NJ surfer Paul Raia in Mexico, choosing wisely....

Feel free to check out the rest of Ryan's many portfolios at:
Make sure you follow Ryan and the great images that he captures as well as staying strange.

Gallery Bar ~ NYC ~ August 4th (8/4)

Sup rad peeps,

Happy Friday! Although it's a bit humid and overcast in the metropolitan area, don't turn your backs from the beach because it's going to be a beautiful weekend! In other news, we would like to introduce you to a sick Gallery Bar that's located on the lower East side of New York City. It is actually called the Gallery Bar, so be sure to check them out. It's a great place that showcases some of the best artists in the New York City area. They typically host exhibits anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks and claim that the art is the focal point that differentiates the bar/night club from any other competitor in the area.

"The Gallery Bar caters to a large clientele of downtown NY tastemakers who strive to be on the cutting edge of fashion, music, and visual arts."

The Gallery Bar in its entirety hosts a capacity of 350 people and includes private tables, bottle service, and private events reservations.

A view of the lower level at the Gallery Bar. Daddy Like.

Simply Anti has been lucky enough to reserve a spot for a private party on August 4th, 2011. We will be showcasing an array of our FAMily artists. They will be covering the walls of the Gallery Bar with their strange yet amazing pieces. It's going to be a wild night and one to remember for the ages. We are teaming up with our friends at Air of Expectancy. Promotions and more details will be coming within a week or so! Stay tuned, stay strange. You won't want to miss this night. I'm hearing of some pretty good drink specials....

A special thanks go to Eric and Mark of AOE.

Thievery Corporation

It's that time of week again. Music Monday is back and this time we have a group that his been around the block for over a decade. Thievery Corporation produces some of my favorite jazz/reggae sounds. From Washington, D.C., Rob Garza and Eric Hilton created the Thievery Corporation in the summer of 1995. They realized their big love for club music and decided to test some sounds in the recording studio. They have some of the most eclectic styles in the music world as they range from dub to reggae to Middle Eastern to jazz and many more.

Get out of the sun and get cooled with some TC.

Where is Mykonos?

Fleet Foxes

Mykonos is a Greek island that spans an area of approximately 86 km squared. This island is mainly comprised of granite and relies heavily on the desalination of sea water in order to supply the small island's population with drinkable water. In Greek mythology, Mykonos was the battle ground in which Zeus fought the Titans. The island was also named in honor of Apollo's grandson Mykons....

ALSO, "Myknonos" is an incredible song by the indie folk rock band Fleet Foxes. Interpreted in many different ways, the song has an incredible feel with many different patterns of rhyme. It is very catchy and shows the band's strength in its vocal harmonies. Check out the song here:

Started by Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset in 2006, Fleet Foxes are from Portland, Oregon. They are considered to be indie folk as well as Baroque pop. They have released two major albums so far in their young existence: Fleet Foxes (2008) and Helplessness Blues (2011). Check out some more tunes and stay tuned for Fleet Foxes as they are making a tour around the world starting June 23 in the United Kingdom.

The Store Tour and More

Hey all!

It's been a crazy Month of May. Here is our most epic blog yet to come as a young company:

First Friday
It has been a long time coming since we have blogged. It has been one of the craziest months of our business's operations as well as our whole lives. We started off the month with First Friday, where we debuted our collaboration tees with artist Ray Gurz (featured at Loose Threads Boutique) and artist Dane S. Thompson DST (featured at Homebase Skate Shop). It was one of the coolest days ever. Both artists had their art galleries at both stores, which were directly across the street from each other. Try to imagine the commotion of that night (and the after-party!). Take a look at the two rad tees below:

"Ray Gurz Collab Tee" in white

"DST Collab Tee/Tank" as featured on the Spring/Summer 2011 Lookbook

New Jersey Store Tour
The weekend after First Friday was spent with our mothers for a few days of appreciation as well as a few days of rest for the NJ Store Tour that would partake from May 11-12th. We started our travels in Long Branch, NJ at Branded Surf and Skate early Wednesday morning and ended all the way down in Wildwood, NJ at Wild Ocean Surf Shop late Thursday afternoon. We had an insanely SUCCESSFUL trip! Sharing our story with 25 different shop owners from all parts of the Jersey coast was one amazing experience. We are pumped with our successes as we will be shearing our wears in more than a handful of new stores after this busy Memorial Day Weekend. Stay tuned for the dealer information as they will be posted on our site (www.simplyanti.com) in the near future. For a brief documentary of our travels, check out the short below:

Red Bull Many Mania
Right after the Store Tour, we hopped on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to hit Delaware and begin our senior week in Ocean City, Maryland. We couldn't have been more amped to celebrate our experience by celebrating with our senior class and getting lucky enough to score some surf. It wasn't until Saturday, May 21, that we were back on track in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to root on team riders Benjamin Taylor and Anthony Jordan Rodgers in the Red Bull Manny Mania at the Skate Plaza. Ben rocked the event taking on 3rd place!!! He was competing with riders from Red Bull, ERGO, and many other big names. We are so pumped on Ben and his victory. We were also lucky enough to pick up new team rider Brandon Sandt who was a semi-finalist at the event. Stay tuned for Brandon's footage and biography on the website in the near future.

Ben Taylor (Bethlehem) finishes 3rd behind Spencer Brown (Maryland) and Timothy Fulton (New Jersey). This photo was taken by Tom Flores from Red Bull Skating.

STAY STRANGE
This is the GIANT recap of the month of May. We are pumped on all of our successes, stories, and experiences. We would like to thank Andy Po, Laura Jasorka, Dane S. Thompson, Ray Gurz, David Chrobuck, Zach Bloom, Kyle Arcamano and the Red Bull Crew, all store owners along the coast of New Jersey, and of course our mothers for giving us these big hearts that keep us driving for more and spreading the strange. Stay tuned for news on the Gallery Bar in NYC...

Foo Fighter Monday

A few weeks ago, one of the best American alternative rock bands released their seventh album called Waisting Light. David Grohl, his holy beard, and the rest of the band are back and seem to be in the best shape yet. You can get a glimpse of the new album with their song Rope, live on Letterman:

You can tell that they made their latest album's TV debut in Beatles fashion, a technique that never ceases to amaze anyone. Waisting Light seems to be heavier than the past albums, which was a main goal for the band. They claimed that they wanted to be a rock band again, and they are proving it as they created this album in David Grohl's garage!

Team Thursday with BEN TAYLOR

Happy Thursday.

It is with our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to new team rider BENJAMIN TAYLOR. Ben is from the 610 Bethlehem and a big part of the community. He is our second rider from the Lehigh Valley (following the infamous Jimi Hendrix look-a-like AJ Rogers). Ben is 16 years young and has an unreal style. We are stoked to have Ben join the Enlightenment of the Strange as he will be a stand out skater in the years to come. Cheers Ben.

Ben is also a businessman himself as he maintains a website called GET SIKED where he features different skaters from the 610 local crew and exposes them to many different outlets in the skating world. When I asked Ben what he has planned for the future, he simply said, "I don't know just yet but I need to be skating." That was a very solidifying answer if you ask me..

Do NOT shave your face, especially above your upper lip.

Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan.
Bamba bamba
bamba bamba,

Rrrrriba everyone. It is time to get your hairs growing. We will be having our 2nd annual Strangest Stache contest that will be celebrated on Cinco de Mayo (yes the 5th of May). We recommend you stop shaving your upper lips and let the natural heavens of greasy facial hair fall on top of your mouth. YES! it is time to save food for later in your face mops and it is time to let go of all dignity to represent yourself as man/woman who possesses the STRANGEST STACHE.

If you cannot grow facial hair for certain reasons, we encourage you to stick or draw a fake stache on your upper lip and have a strange day. Rules are written above.

Family Friday feat. David Chrobuck

Bueno Evening conquistaboogies,

Its Friday baby! This could be the best time of the week. It may have been better if it weren't 42 degrees and raining, but I figured it was a perfect time to write a blog about a close FAMily member of mine, David Chrobuck.

David recently joined the FAM about 2 weeks ago when he contacted us saying that he enjoyed the Strange culture and that he was an avid photographer. What's better to do than invite him to the production lab and have a quick meeting with him and get to know him a little better. Right off the bat, he sold it to us as he proclaimed hilarious quirks about who he is and why he not only loves photography but also skiing.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, David attained the lifestyle of a dedicated skier as someone who would rather be in snow than in 75-degree weather. This, you may say, is strange, and, yes, that is why we love him. He is someone who is completely dedicated to what he does and allows nothing to interfere with his dreams of skiing and shooting epic photos not only for us but for the world as one. David has been an amazing acquisition for Simply Anti. He has created some amazing sequences with AJ Rogers at the Bethlehem Skate plaza, he has taken some awesome stills of our new snap back hats with perfect angle, and he has also been a really good friend with his humor and dignity.

David's Masterpiece

Cheers to David Chrobuck. Enjoy your weekends and remember to Stay Strange.

Wednesday on wheels

Rich, David, and I spent a joyous afternoon at the Bethlehem Skate Plaza with new team rider AJ Rogers. This was right after AJ introduced himself by throwing two 360 flips in a row.

Morning cats,

I think you all know AJ Rogers by now. He is a fresh, young stud in the skating scene in the Lehigh Valley. We immediately got to meet up with him this past Sunday to get a nice sunny day of promo. He was more than willing to show us a few flips and things on his board and amaze the plaza with his persistence and mellow attitude. Here are a few features that we collected of AJ during the course of 45 minutes:

360 flip over gap.

Blunt to Axel Stall 180 out

Not only is AJ doing some tricks on the playground for promotional purposes, but he has also entered the Philly Am Pro Jam this month! He will be in the sponsored division and will be reppin' Simply Anti to his fullest. Come out and support AJ; this is a big deal! Date is April 30th. For more details, check out the facebook page. Oh, and I think one more sequence is in order...

MUSIC MONDAY CONTEST RESULTS..

Very excited to be back to Music Monday,

It was a very successful last week. We had many participants in the music contest. We also recently acquired our new INSANE skater Anthony Jordan Rogers. Yesterday, at the Bethlehem skate plaza, AJ showed us about 5 sick features that will be posted here in a few days. Stay tuned for that. Check out a little clip:

Did he land it?????

In the mean time, we have decided the winner of the Music Monday Contest from last week!!!! The winner of the contest will be receiving a free tee as well as stickers and a bunch of other little goodies. Through all of the awesome entries, we had to come up with one winner. And the winner is...

ALEX ZOOK! He gave us a great entry of a ton of new alternative/indie/electronic artists who introduce sick new sounds. Among them all, we enjoyed the artist, Oh Land, the most. Born in Copenhagen, Nanna Oland Fabricius (stage name: Oh Land) made her US TV debut on the tonight show with David Letterman. She is known for her pop, electronic, and experimental sounds coupling with her strong sex appeal. Check out some of her great clips..

Oh Land is currently touring the U.S. as the supporting act for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. She has two released albums titled Fauna (2008) and Oh Land (2011). Stay involved with Oh Land; she is making a big rise.

Thanks for staying strange Alex Zook.

Special Alert: AJ Rogers joins team!

What's up everyone!

We have great news to share with you all. We have recently acquired some local talent to the Simply Anti Skate team. His name is Anthony Jordan Rogers, from Easton, Pennsylvania. We are so pumped because AJ crushes it all over the the Lehigh Valley. We promise you; this isn't an April Fools joke..

I first met AJ during the Redbull snow event, the Easton Rail Jam, this past February 2011. I got a real good feel from him when he approached me at our promotional table co-hosted by 610 Homebase Skateshop. He was a real jolly guy who seemed ecstatic about anything in extreme sports. I figured he was a good skater even though he stands well over 6 feet tall. Just see for yourself in some of his videos. He kills it.

It was perfect timing really. Just as we were discussing how we were in desperate need of a local skater from the Lehigh Valley, AJ gets in touch with us. We are so pumped that he is now with us. Everyone keep your eyes peeled; AJ is dirty.

Check out his portion on the website: Anthony Jordan Rogers
Also check out his sick photographer Mike Bazulka: Bazooka Mike

Stay Strange and watch out for those fools today.

T is for Team and the Team is on Thursdays

Ladies and Gentleman can you please join me in giving a warm welcome to team rider Dean O'Keeffe!!!

Dean was one of our very first team riders as we asked him to join up after hearing talk about his surfing/skating/snowboarding abilities through a mutual friend. Seeing pictures to back up these stories we knew Dean would be a great addition to our brand and help spread the strange.
Dean now attends the the Maine College of Art getting his study on after a brief hiatus from school.
Dean has really helped our brand grow and stray true to its roots of allowing nothing to interfere with your dreams. Dean like all of our athletes is just trying to live life to its fullest enjoying every day.

Look for more to come from Dean in the way of videos, pics, and strange.

Check an old video of Dean getting wet in the summer!
